Finding overlooked Puerto Rico restaurants, food trucks, things to do, and the people behind them.
Welcome to Real Puerto Rico by me, Dennis Schaal, with an occasional assist from other writers. In these posts you’ll read about the next cool restaurant or place to visit, and we won’t be afraid to dish about their highlights and low points. Our focus will often, but not exclusively, meander beyond the over-touristed San Juan metro area. Get out of Condado, and let’s uncover and experience Real Puerto Rico.
Importantly, you’ll discover the backstories of these venues and locales, often through the words of the people who run them every day, as we cajole them into sharing their triumphs, challenges, and dreams.
So this isn’t your typical tourism promotion blog, but if it helps you get out onto the 1.5-lane windy roads through the mountains of Puerto Rico, then, damn, we’ll take it.
I live in and love Puerto Rico, and in my day and sometimes night job, I’m a travel business journalist. I’m also an ex-USA Today online travel columnist, Skift’s Founding Editor, a writer, and and a storyteller.
I’m searching for the next unique joint or jaunt to tell you about. Like the abandoned Hotel Ponce Intercontinental atop Cerro del Vigia in Ponce. Stay away from the elevators for now!
In the meantime, tell the world about Real Puerto Rico.
